Rating: - Un historical
Filmmaker Franco Zeffirelli (Endless Love) adds his own 'Flower Power' 60s style philosophy to the conversion story of St. Francis of Assisi. It's a shame that the film director didn't think the real story of this great saint's life was interesting enough to be told truthfully. (So it goes with Hollywood). If you do decide to see this film, we strongly recommend reading St. Francis' real-life biography so as not to be mislead! Caution: there are a couple of nudity scenes. St. Francis of Assisi is a true Prince and pillar of the Catholic Church. He was given the gift of the Stigmata and suffered Christ's wounds in his body for many years. (Not revealed in this movie). St. Francis had a very true and deep devotion to Our Lord present in the Blessed Sacrament. (Also not revealed). The truth is, his real-life story is beyond anything Hollywood would ever dare produce today!
Rating: - Heartwarming Story, Brilliant Movie
I'm a seminarian and I viewed this film for four times! Franco Zefferelli is magnificent! He has truly this artistic style of directing especially in the scece where Pope Innocent III and Francis has this dialogue. Graham Faulkner is truly well-defined actor as he portrayed St. Francis so as Jodie Bowker as Clare and the other casts! I like also the scenes where Francis is on the roof top and also his trial in front of Bishop Guido that is most tearful scenes to watch! The productions is great so as the music theme, Donovan certainly blended more emotions in his scoring. What more could be interesting in the movie are the artistic sense of cinematography and the movement of the cameras especially in the scene where Pope Innocent III is in deep thought then the icon of Christ behind him slowly appearing in the scene! Brilliant! Watch it! This movie will truly inspire you!
Rating: - A movie that changed my outlook on life
This film with all its historical inaccuracies and its poor account of St. Clare and Bishop Guido has however the spirit of Franciscanism at its heart and its message is a relevant today as it was in the 13th century. Faulkner is brilliant, he captures the simple, pure humility of St.Francis. What ever happened to him after the movie? Donovan's music is outstanding and fits in perfectly with the simple and humble atmosphere permeating throughout the movie. To learn a more accurate account of the life of St. Francis I must recommend a book called 'St. Francis of Assisi, The Legend and the Life' by Michael Robson OFM Conv.Pax et Bonum, A young Irish Secular Franciscan.
