Rating:  - Wonderful! A diamond in the rough.
This movie was made quite a few years before I was born and I would never have known about it if not for AMC's constant rotation. I admit that the macabre humor perplexed me at first, but the superb cast pulls it off wonderfully. Vivian Pickles, who plays Harold's blissfully clueless mom, is so funny that she could've stolen the movie from the two title characters if she had appeared in more scenes. One of the movie's funniest moments is when she signs Harold up for a dating service and then tells him, "They screen out the fat and the ugly, so obviously this is a firm of high standards." All the other great things about 'Harold & Maude' have already been said by the other reviewers. I'm glad that this film is so beloved by so many people. It's a great legacy for Colin Higgins, who wrote such a beautiful book in 1970. Sadly, he passed away in 1988.
Rating: - One of the best. Period.
From the opening scene where Harold hangs himself, to one of the best endings I seen, "Harold and Maude" is wonderful. The story is about a young man who, in an attempt to get his aristocratic mother's attention, commits phony suicides. When he's not doing that, he's attending funerals, and one day he meets an elderly woman named Maude. Maude is the exact opposite of Harold, joyous, energetic, lover of life. The two become friends and form a close bond between each other. Meanwhile, Harold's mother, who is completely oblivious to who Harold is as a person, starts to find women for Harold to marry, but he scares them all away, because the person he really loves is Maude. If this plot sounds pretty off beat, it is. I would recommend this movie for fans of "The Graduate", "Rushmore" and "Bottle Rocket". This a fantastic film that everyone needs to see.

This movie is a must-see... period. I have never been so moved by a film before in my life. Harold and Maude is such a creative film filled to the brim with symbolism and dark humor that every time I watch it, I find something else to sincerely reflect on. I don't really know anyone who didn't like this movie upon first viewing.I will not describe this movie for the sheer fact that it makes an incredible impact on the viewer if he or she knows absolutely nothing about it. I know, because it did me. I highly recommend you do NOT read any description, spoiler review or anything related to the content of this movie because the pleasure with viewing this will be much, much more intense. Go rent or buy and laugh and cry -- I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
