When Sex and the City (SATC) premiered on HBO a few years back, it took a while for it to catch on. But once it did, there was no stopping it. SATC is one of those pop cultural phenomenons that everyone had to see coming, but no one was prepared for. Easily one of the top comedies on television, SATC follows the lives of four trendy, funny, upper class single gals in New York City: Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon), Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), and Charlotte York (Kristen Davis) as they date and sleep with what seems the entire male population of New York City. Each episode we're treated to their chat sessions, where they discuss their philosophies on dating and secrets about the men in their lives. Those discussions are interwoven into Carrie's sex advice column 'Sex and the City' she writes every week for the New York Post.

Characterization is key on Sex and the City, and each main character is very different from the others. Carrie is the fine central intelligence of the show; she's the 'voice' in our voice-over, the one who gets the most screen time. Miranda is fiery and opinionated; she's never shy about telling her friends or her man exactly what she thinks. Charlotte fancies herself a traditionalist, and she is much more uptight than her friends. And Samantha is, shall we say, liberated. She doesn't believe in love or relationships; she believes in the value of a good man and even better sex. These characters are different enough that their interaction keeps the show interesting.

The four leads bring a sassy, light-hearted flair to even the most serious issue. The fourth season begins with Miranda as a new mom, having to deal with all kinds of new issues, including feeling like an outcast with all her single friends. Miranda also is the star in a hilarious episode where she joins Weight Watchers. Life is not all rosy for Carrie, Samantha and Charlotte. They are still waiting to find Mr. Right, even Samantha, though she would be the last to admit it.

Always fun, always hilarious, "Sex and the City" is a true winner, and this fourth season is no exception. If you like irreverence and bawdy humor, SATC is a must. Highly recommended!
