One of the BEST shows that HBO, or any television network for that matter, has come up with in...years! At last, us 20-somethings (heading towards our 30's), have a show to call our own! Superbly cast, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte (Kristin Davis), and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) give us characters to which we can all relate. Carrie, a NY-City paper columnist who writes provoking shorts about "sex and the city," is a witty, trendy, modern woman of the '90's--and a true romantic at heart. She wants the sweep-you-off-your-feet, love-at-first-sight type of romance which she seems to get from Mr. Big (Chris Noth)...but Mr. Big isn't ready to give back to her to the same degree (c'mon, we've ALL been there). Samantha, the most liberated and sexually adventurous of the four, is "a woman trapped in a New York City man's body"...and all she wants is a good time. As she so poignantly puts it, "I'm tri-sexual; I'll try anything once!" Miranda, a corporate lawyer, is the epitome of the hardened, jaded, suspicious 30-something woman with a razor-sharp sense of humor, and a heart of gold. And Charlotte, an idealistic, sorority-type prude, searches for a man with 3 qualities: money, looks, and an apartment on the East Side. Watch Carrie, and her three cronies, go from man, to man, to man in their never-ending search for "Mr. Right," while they often find, and settle, for "Mr. Right Now". This show is HILARIOUS, well-written, always versatile, quite witty, and a sumptuous eye-candy for the trend-addicted crowd. I rented it to see if it was worth to own...and my answer? YES, YES, YES! I'm buying it--and so should you! This is a piece of TV history, and an essential guide to pop-culture, and every modern woman should own a copy!
Rating: - It Doesn't Get Better or Funnier Than This
When Sex and the City (SATC) premiered on HBO a few years back, it took a while for it to catch on. But once it did, there was no stopping it. SATC is one of those pop cultural phenomenons that everyone had to see coming, but no one was prepared for. Easily one of the top comedies on television, SATC follows the lives of four trendy, funny, upper class single gals in New York City: Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon), Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), and Charlotte York (Kristen Davis) as they date and sleep with what seems the entire male population of New York City. Each episode we're treated to their chat sessions, where they discuss their philosophies on dating and secrets about the men in their lives. Those discussions are interwoven into Carrie's sex advice column "Sex and the City" she writes every week for the New York Post. One of the great things about SATC are the characters. Each main character is very different from the others. Carrie is the fine central intelligence of the show; she's the "voice" in our voice-over, the one who gets the most screen time. Miranda is fiery and opinionated; she's never shy about telling her friends or her man exactly what she thinks. Charlotte fancies herself a traditionalist, and she is much more uptight than her friends. In one memorable episode, a date makes what is, for her, an unusual request, and she spends the rest of the episode crying that she doesn't want to be the "up the butt girl." And Samantha is, shall we say, liberated. She doesn't believe in love or relationships; she believes in the value of a good man and even better sex. These characters are different enough that their interaction keeps the show interesting. It could even be said that the 'fifth' main character is New York City itself. The city plays such an intregal role in the show that you really feel you are there. The four leads bring a sassy, light-hearted flair to even the most serious issue. That doesn't mean that the storylines can't be serious, though. Carrie's relationship with Mr. Big (Chris Noth) has its ups and downs, and the downs are pretty darn low. Speaking of storylines, this show has some doozies. In one episode, Carrie farts in front of Big and becomes paranoid when he doesn't call for a couple of days. The other three ladies give her differing advice, ranging from "Don't worry about it" to "Oh my God it's over!" In another episode, Carrie contemplates motherhood. In a third, Charlotte meets a famous painter who has recently begun painting vaginas. SATC Season 1 contains twelve episodes: Models & Morals Bay of Married Pigs Valley of the Twenty-Something Guys The Power of Female Sex Secret Sex The Monogamists Three's a Crowd The Turtle and the Hare The Baby Shower The Drought Oh Come All Ye Faithful If you like irreverence and bawdy humor, SATC is a must. Highly recommended!
Rating: - Where The Adventure Begins!
I bought "Sex..." one and two at the same time, to catch up on all I'd missed previously. I'd never seen these episodes, having started watching during season 3, and I was curious about the history between Carrie and Big, as well as having a thirst for a new fix of this great HBO original program.............. I was surprised that the very first show (pilot) was pretty weak, but that is the ONLY episode I wasn't crazy about. Getting to know Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha from the start is great fun. As the first season goes on, we really get to know the four distinct and seperate characters with their common problem, finding a normal man in the Big Apple. ........... I really find this show very entertaining, and am very happy with my two "Sex..." sets. If you've never seen the show, or started late like I did, here's a chance to catch up on what you've missed. I'm sorry I didn't tape season three, but I'm wising up and taping all the shows now, new and repeat, when aired. ............ For the single lady who is searching for her prince, or for the married lady like me who has been lucky enough to find hers, at some point you'll relate to this show, or at the very least, you'll be entertained. Even if you have a different agenda, you'll STILL enjoy hanging out with these four friends. ........... For the men who are "Out There," although I can't speak about how they might view the series, I can assume that the average man most probably won't enjoy this as much as women do. Men are often unympathetic characters on the show. Yes, that's an understatement! ............ I think an open minded man might watch this to get a handle of what the opposite sex might be thinking or going through. Let's face facts though, most WON'T want to get in touch with their "feminine side." That said, the married woman will probably enjoy this as a solo viewing pleasure. However, I think that women who are single, will love the show, and feel like..."Hey, it's not me, it's YOU" toward their relationships, and about the whole single and dating experience in general. ............ Either way, every time you pop it in the VCR, it's a girls night out in the safety of your own home. Get yours and enjoy a well done vicarious thrill in the single world.
